About the Artist

Betty Foy Botts

This work is all about spirit. It’s a journey that begins with an unknown ending that Botts discovers through the physical act of painting. Like a metamorphosis, a painting is transformed, taking on life as she applies paint to birch panels. Botts feels she is simply the vessel and what is being painted is a mystery that only the spirit knows. The hardest part for Botts is separating herself from her work and relinquish control. She attempts to separate her cognitive or intellectual thinking in favor of reacting and responding on an intuitive level. When titling her wildlife abstracts, Botts turns to the Bible. Scribbling a verse on the back of each painting, she feels captures the soul and spirit of that piece. Botts is the daughter of former Governor of Georgia Carl E. Sanders and artist Betty Foy Sanders. Since early childhood she has been influenced by her mother’s achievements in fine art painting and the Georgia arts community. She currently works from her personal study in Atlanta. Botts is collected by many individuals and corporations throughout the Southeast. She is also part of the Betty Foy Sanders Art Collection at Georgia Southern University.
